Opening in 1990 and located in downtown Carbondale Illinois, we are one of the oldest tabletop game and comic stores in the country. Currently, we stock over 500 different roleplaying, board and miniatures games and an equal number of comics in about 6000 square feet of space.
Collections
We deal in Magic, Pokemon and Yu Gi Oh singles as well as used board and RPGs, both for the casual and the collector. Due to the number of shipments we process on Tuesday, we do not trade for or purchase used items or cards that day. If you have a large collection at which you wish us to look, please call to schedule an appointment.
Appraisals
If you wish us to appraise cards or collections for insurance purposed, we will be glad to do so and to give you a form indicating our appraised valuation. Our appraisal pricing starts at $50.
Our gaming areas can seat 24 players comfortably in one large back gaming room and two smaller game rooms in the front of the store. We also feature a large gallery of original game are, including the largest viewable display of original Dave Trampier work in the country. Customers have told us we have the largest selection of games between Chicago and Memphis as well as Columbus and Denver, but don't take our word for it. Stop by when you are in southern Illinois and see for yourself.
Employment
If you are interested in working here, we are always taking applications. Stop by the store during business hours to pick one up.

Lilly joined the store staff in 2021 She enjoys D&D, preferring to play a ranger or, occasionally, a wizard. She plays Magic but has not learned Pokemon or Yu Gi Oh yet and, while she does not play Warhammer 40K or Age of Sigmar, she can readily direct potential players to other players in Carbondale. She will try any boardgame but really enjoys Betrayal at House on the Hill, Coup, Cards Against Humanity and, when time permits, Monopoly.
Scott owns the shop and has since we opened in 1990. He has played D&D since first edition and has found something to like in it and every edition since then. While not a big collectible card game player or miniatures gamer, he does like most boardgames with Catan and Wits and Wagers among his favorites. Partial to the DC line, he has followed the Teen Titans through assorted incarnations since the 1960s and, much like D&D, has found something to like in every series.
Gary has worked at Castle Perilous for over 30 years. Most of that time was as a part-time employee on Sundays while also working at John A. Logan College but since retiring from the college in 2017 he has worked more shifts at the store.
He has been playing Dungeons and Dragons since 1980 along with other RPG games sporadically. In the past 15 years his interest has turned to board games as well, so he can answer many questions about both D&D and board games, of which his favorite is probably Catan. He also ran a game club at JALC for around 10 years to introduce students and community members to RPG and board games.
Devon is likely the most knowledgeable and active Magic player at the store and will happily talk Magic for hours. Just ask him. He also enjoys a good Pokemon game and plays D&D 5E on a regular basis. he does not read many comics but does enjoy Venom on occasion.
Syd has been with Castle Perilous since July of 2019. She enjoys playing various board games, be it high-cooperative or competitive, with Settlers of Catan and Werewolf being her favorites. With almost ten years of roleplaying experience under her belt, Syd can answer most questions you might have about Dungeons and Dragons as well as painting miniatures for the game.
In her free time she also plays the Fantasy Flight Star Wars Edge of the Empire game, and adds to her ever growing dice collection. When she isn't playing games, Syd also reads comics and graphic novels. Monstress, Something Is Killing the Children, and Ghosted in L.A. are her favorites, though she will read anything fantasy or horror.
Brandon started working at Castle Perilous in 2023 as a staff member and the primary store DM. They run 2 sessions of D&D per week on Friday and Saturday nights. They are also a big anime and manga fan and hope to do some voiceover work in the near future.
He loves his job, and he loves running and playing in games. Hope to see you here!
