Opening in 1990 and located in downtown Carbondale Illinois, we are one of the oldest tabletop game and comic stores in the country. Currently, we stock over 500 different roleplaying, board and miniatures games and an equal number of comics in about 6000 square feet of space. We deal in Magic, Pokemon and Yu Gi Oh singles as well as used board and RPGs, both for the casual and the collector.
Our gaming areas can seat 52 players comfortably in one large back gaming room and two smaller game rooms in the front of the store. We also feature a large gallery of original game are, including the largest viewable display of original Dave Trampier work in the country. Customers have told us we have the largest selection of games between Chicago and Memphis as well as Columbus and Denver, but don't take our word for it. Stop by when you are in southern Illinois and see for yourself.
"I've been bugging the crap out of some other businesses (like I do ya'll) and you are by far the most professional and have the best customer service that I have seen. Out of 22 other businesses that I am in contact with, there is none that I would be ranking higher than ya'll. Not blowing smoke or anything. I am, in all honesty, hard to work with, I change my mind a lot and ask a lot of questions. I can very easily push buttons to and past the point of no return. Yet, ya'll have stuck with me. Why? I don't know. What I do know is that ya'll have a life long customer and supporter. There is none better that ya'll out here that I have done any business with. Keep up the good work." Brian E.
You have been a great help over these last several years. I look forward to many more years with y'all.

Scott owns the shop and has since we opened in 1990. He has played D&D since first edition and has found something to like in it and every edition since then. While not a big collectible card game player or miniatures gamer, he does like most boardgames with Catan and Wits and Wagers among his favorites. Partial to the DC line, he has followed the Teen Titans through assorted incarnations since the 1960s and, much like D&D, has found something to like in every series.
Brian has been the manager since 2006 but has been a gamer since 1984 when he played the original D&D red box. In the early days he also enjoyed Champions, Shadowrun, Top Secret, and Paranoia. Brian was later introduced to Magic the Gathering in 1994 and played the game until 2013. He is also a life-long fan of comics and in the early '90's, he became interested in Manga and Anime. His favorite series are Battle Angel Alita, Akira, Planetes, X-Men, Empowered, Giant Days, and may more which he will be happy to discuss...Just Ask!
Gary has worked at Castle Perilous for over 30 years. Most of that time was as a part-time employee on Sundays while also working at John A. Logan College but since retiring from the college in 2017 he has worked more shifts at the store.
He has been playing Dungeons and Dragons since 1980 along with other RPG games sporadically. In the past 15 years his interest has turned to board games as well, so he can answer many questions about both D&D and board games, of which his favorite is probably Catan. He also ran a game club at JALC for around 10 years to introduce students and community members to RPG and board games.
Isaiah likes roleplaying games, but especially likes Dungeons and Dragons 5th edition, Pathfinder, and Fantasy Flight Games Star Wars rpg. Isaiah loves magic the gathering, and tries to play every week. Isaiah also enjoys many board games, such as betrayal at house on the hill, Catan, and Mysterium.
As for comics, Isaiah likes Sandman, but has recently been enjoying Scream, Doctor Doom, and Teen Titans.
Devon is likely the most knowledgeable and active Magic player at the store and will happily talk Magic for hours. Just ask him. He also enjoys a good Pokemon game and plays D&D 5E on a regular basis. he does not read many comics but does enjoy Venom on occasion.
Syd has been in Castle Perilous since July of 2019. She enjoys playing various board games, be it high-cooperative or competitive, with Settlers of Catan and Werewolf being her favorites. With about eight years of roleplaying experience under her belt, Syd runs the Dungeon and Dragons games on Friday and Saturday, and occasionally runs the Wednesday games as a substitute.
In her free time she also plays the Fantasy Flight Star Wars Edge of the Empire game, and adds to her ever growing dice collection. When she isn't playing games, Syd also reads comics and graphic novels. Monstress, Something Is Killing the Children, and Ghosted in L.A. are her favorites, though she will read anything fantasy or horror. Being a fan of several anime, video games, and movies, Syd often cosplays as Rey, Sailor Jupiter, and D.Va during store events, though she expects to have several more costumes ready to be worn soon.
Rowen has been a gamer his entire life and enjoys many facets of the gaming community such as anime, board games, card games, comics, cosplay, graphic novels, manga, RPGs and more.
Recently he has started the graphic novel Montress. Now being a few volumes in Rowen has come to the conclusion that he enjoys Montress for the key themes explored within the series. These themes being balance, war, racism, and propaganda. Along with Montress they also recommend the titles Animosity, Fragments of Horror, Little Bird, Manor Black, and Uzumaki.
Rowen has also recently started playing a few RPGs systems that are new to them including, Star Wars, Monster Hearts, and Call of Cthulhu. While Rowen enjoys a good RPG session and graphic novel read his love for Pokemon tcg has never diminished. After running a Pokemon league for three years he admires that the game is fun and inclusive for all ages and invites you to come play a match at the store any Monday 5-8.
Brandon started working working at Castle Perilous about 10 years ago and now enjoys the self-appointed title of ‘Raja of Role-Playing’. He is also finishing his PhD at SIU wherehe is studying the use of RPGs in social life and identity creation.
He does a little of everything at the store when there; clean, run games, stock, graphic design, and do the cashier thing. While he's not not on the clock as often as he once was, hopefullyhe'll be within the Castle confines more often starting this fall. Hisinterests in games has evolved throughout the decades, and currently hisfavorite games are most editions of (A)D&D, Castles & Crusades, Dungeon Crawl Classics, World of Darkness Games, Palladium Fantasy, Call of Cthulhu, Chill, Mouse Guard, Shadow Run, Magic the Gathering, Cards against Humanity, Catan, various obscure fantasy/Sci fi RPGs, and strategic boardgames like Diplomacy, Risk, Arkham Horror, etc. He loves his job, and he loves running and playing in games. Hope to see you here!
